A letter from my workbench

I Spent 40 Years Making Jewelry For Women Whose Names You'd Recognize In An Instant. Then The Internet Decided I Didn't Exist. So Today, The Collection They Wore Is Yours.

Sixty-two years behind the same New York counter. Eight pieces per design, then retired forever — and several are already down to their last few.

👍 Over 1M+ American Women Have Found Their Way To My Counter

My name is Margaret Prescott. If you've made it this far, you probably saw one of my pieces somewhere and wondered where it came from. So let me tell you — from the beginning, in my own words.

Two things before I start. First: I can't name the women who wore my work. I signed confidentiality agreements — what they call NDAs now — and I keep my word. I can tell you everything else. Second: I only ever make eight of each design. When the eighth sells, the design is retired forever. Several of the pieces you'll see below are already down to their last two or three. I mention it now so you don't discover it too late.

A Childhood Under The Counter

My parents opened this shop in 1964. My whole world was the space underneath that counter — polishing rouge, my mother's coffee, the warm metallic smell of worked copper.

I fell asleep down there to the sound of my father's file moving across silver, slow and even, like a heartbeat.

I finished my first piece at fourteen — a small copper band my mother wore until the day she couldn't anymore. My hands shook the whole time.

Nobody called it "artisanal" back then. It was simply how jewelry was made — by a person, at a bench, for another person.

A Childhood Under The Counter

The Years The Famous Women Came

By the height of my career, my pieces were ending up in places I still won't brag about. Stylists came in person. Dressing rooms sent handwritten notes. And with every note came a piece of paper for me to sign — a promise never to say who. I signed every one. I've kept every one. So forgive me for what I leave out.

One evening, as I was locking up, a woman came in alone — just a headscarf and sunglasses, though it was nearly dark. You would know her name. Your mother would know her name. I'd know it too, if I were allowed to say it.

She put on a pair of my earrings, looked in my counter mirror, and said quietly: "This is the first thing I've worn all year that wasn't chosen for me." Then she paid in cash and walked out like anybody else.

Eight of each design were made. Then the design was retired, forever. That rule is what made the famous women come. It has never changed — not even for her.

Then The World Moved Into A Phone

Nobody sends you a letter saying the world has decided to forget you. It happens the way dusk happens — gradually, then all at once.

The brands that won were no longer the ones with the best hands. They were the ones with the biggest advertising budgets. Factories made one design a million times, plated it thin, and sold it for $12 — before it turned green on some poor woman's finger.

One December evening I set my best work in years — an eleven-day pearl piece — in the window, and stood outside in my coat. Every single person walked past looking down at a glowing screen. I remember thinking: I didn't get worse. I got invisible.

If you've ever built something with your own hands, you know that exact feeling. It is a very quiet kind of heartbreak — and it happens to so many of us.

Then The World Moved Into A Phone

Three Rules I Have Never Broken

Through the golden years and the invisible ones, I never once cheapened the work to survive. I kept the three rules my father set in 1964.

Rule one: every piece is finished by hand, at this bench, behind this counter. The last hands that touch a Prescott piece before yours are mine.

Rule two: every design is limited to eight pieces. When the eighth sells, the design is retired forever. Eight women in the world — that's the whole idea. It also means that when a design is nearly gone, it really is nearly gone.

Rule three: nothing leaves this shop plated. Ever. If a Prescott piece ever tarnishes, you are refunded double what you paid — no time limit. No factory could survive that promise. I've built my whole life so that I can.

How You Found Me Anyway

Now for the part I never saw coming: the same internet that buried me is how women finally found me.

It started with daughters — posting photos of pieces their mothers had worn for forty years, still glowing. Then articles like this one, passed from woman to woman the way my address used to be passed between dressing rooms.

Over a million women in the USA have now chosen a Prescott piece. I keep their letters behind the counter, and I answer every one myself.

One I will carry to the end. Dorothy, widowed in the spring, wrote that my little pearl ring was "the first thing I've bought for myself since he's been gone." I locked the door ten minutes early that day, sat at my bench, and cried like a girl. That letter is what all sixty-two years were for.

How You Found Me Anyway

Why My Prices Look Wrong

Women write to me confused. They see the work, feel the weight of it, then see the price and assume there's been a mistake.

There's no mistake. In sixty-two years, I have never paid a celebrity, never bought an advertising campaign, never rented a glittering flagship on Fifth Avenue. There is no marketing department upstairs — there is no upstairs.

The big brands pass every one of those costs on to you. That is how a plated factory copy ends up costing five times my price.

That is why my pieces sell for up to 80% less than the big names charge for look-alikes that won't survive two summers. I'd rather be underestimated than dishonest.

An Invitation From My Workbench

So here is my invitation, offered the old way — warmly, and only once.

Look through my collection at the Prescott Jewelry Online Shop. Every design still has some of its eight pieces left — but I'll be honest with you: several are down to their last two or three, and I have no way of making more once they're gone. My hands only do so much in a day.

Whatever you choose ships free anywhere in the US, arrives in 1–3 days, and comes with thirty days to change your mind — though the letters tell me almost nobody does.

Most of what I love about the old world is gone. This part isn't. Not while I'm standing here. But please — if a piece speaks to you, don't leave it for another day. That's the one thing I can't promise you: that it will still be there.

With love from behind the counter,
Margaret Prescott

An Invitation From My Workbench

From the letters on my counter

I read her story on a Tuesday night and cried at the part about the shop window. My mother had a Prescott piece from the seventies — she still wears it every Sunday. I finally ordered my own.

I'm 58 and I've spent my whole life buying jewelry for other people. This is the first piece I bought just for me. The signed card inside undid me completely.

I've been disappointed by online jewelry for years — pretty pictures, sad little trinkets in the box. This is the first piece that looked BETTER in person. You can feel a human being made it.

Mine was number six of the eight. Knowing only seven other women in the world have this design makes it feel like mine in a way nothing from the mall ever has.

Only 8 of each design were ever made. Several are already down to their last 2–3 pieces — when the eighth sells, that design is gone for good. No restock, no reissue.
